This past week, the students listened to Zippy Zebra, the story of a zebra in a zoo who loves things that start with the letter ‘Z’. Ms. Mercer’s students did an exciting art project about Zippy Zebra in the zoo. For this project, the students pasted cutouts of zoo animals onto a piece of paper, pasted brown paper shaped like cages onto the animals, and then creatively decorated the zoo animals and the background. The students also had fun acting out a puppet show of Zippy Zebra. Ms. Mercer’s students can’t wait to see what fun and educational activity they will do next week!

Kindergarten Oceans

By Emily M.

All eighty kindergartens recently went on a field trip to the Lake Theatre in downtown Oak Park. Lauren thought the worst thing about learning how to read is that the stories did not have any princesses in them. Lauren, Cole and the rest of the children in Ms. Kelly’s class have lots of fun while learning new exciting things.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_I_Tm73iTA5U/S6kai1velqI/AAAAAAAAAAk/jkYB3LEw8Yw/s200/100_1891.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451918009752786594" />
Two of Ms. Zielinski's students enjoying a class dance party.

Joke Day in Ms. Berenstein's Class

By Emmy M. and Emma S.
In November, the kindergarten class had a joke day. This is a hands-on environment that lets children not only build on their imagination, but build on their social skills with other children from different classes. Wonder Works has puzzles, games, and activities for younger children. They liked playing in the tree houses and tents. The kindergarten also enjoyed dressing up and going on the stage! They had almost 80 children together on the field trip.

Ms. Zielenski's Class

By Emma S.

Ms. Zielinski’s class learned about different kinds of apples, earlier in the year. The most popular type was the red apple. In December, the class learned about types of cookies. The class had a taste test and voted for which cookie they liked best. The two highest-scoring cookies were Oreos and gingerbread men.The students enjoy playing in their classroom’s dramatic play area. In December, their play area was set up as a bakery. Currently, the play area is a clothes store. Recently, they have started learning about clothes. They now know about hats, mittens, and other clothing items that people use to keep warm. Ms. Zielinski’s class seems to be having a fun time learning at school.

Holidays In the Class

Article by Emmy M. and Photograph by Emily H.

For the winter break, the kindergarten classes are learning about all the different holidays people celebrate. In the picture to the right, Ms. Saliny is painting the hands of one of the children. The children then make two hand prints on paper. They then washed their hands and paint one candle above each finger on the paper like a menorah. Each child got to do this project.
